To celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2012, the Norfolk Southern Railway painted 20 freight diesels in paint schemes honoring its predecessor railroads. Half of the prototype schemes were applied to General Electric ES44AC diesels by Norfolk Southern employees at its Chattanooga, TN and Altoona, PA shops. The remaining heritage schemes were painted on EMD SD70ACe locomotives at Progress Rail Services’ shops in Muncie, IN.

The General Electric ES44's and Norfolk Southern Heritage Locomotives have proved to be just as popular in the model world as the real one. They have previously been produced in HO Scale by several manufacturers. However, these new Broadway Limited ES44's offer something none have offered before, working smoke units. So not only will they feature the level of detail and sound Broadway Limited is known for, they will look even more the part with something no other HO Scale ES44 has. This is truly a new and exciting features for HO Scale diesel locomotives brought to market by Broadway Limited.

This new features is not limited to the Norfolk Southern units, it is also included on the Union Pacific locos offered in this release and will also be offered on other upcoming Broadway Limited products.

The General Electric ES44AC was developed in the early 2000's and entered service in 2005. Commonly known as a  "GEVO" locomotive, these feature a 4400 horsepower GEVO12 prime mover designed to meet the EPA Tier 2 pollution reduction standards. These locomotives are both cleaner and more fuel efficient than their predecessors.

Since their introduction, the model has seen continued and significant improvement to take advantage of new technology and meet new requirements. GE is in the process of testing a natural gas variant as well as producing models to meet the EPA Tier 4 pollution reduction standards taking effect in 2015.

The model has been extremely successful with well over 5000 units having been produced with no end in sight.
