Built in the 1990's, these locomotive form the backbone of long haul Amtrak passenger service. Developed by GE, over three hundred of these locomotives were built with units also operated by Via Rail and Metro-North. Powered by GE FDL16 prime movers, these locomotives were designed for low overall height and are the only locomotives in the Amtrak roster that can operate across the entire system. They also feature a monocoque body design for lower weight and better aerodynamic performance. Since their introduction, various upgrades and improvements have been made to the locomotive to reduce operating and maintenance costs. One of the most noticeable of these is the replacement of the original noses with fibreglass versions.
Check out jlwii2000's review of the Kato HO Scale P42 below:
To celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2011, Amtrak developed four paint schemes to reflect the previous paint schemes used by Amtrak, while working with the body style of the P42's. These locomotives saw service on the special exhibit train that traveled the country that year and are now in regular service and seen across the country. These locomotives are popular with both railfans and modelers alike.
Kato has previously announced the production of the Phase I & Phase II schemes, with the release of these in Standard DC only weeks away. They have now announced they will produce the Phase III and Phase IV scheme locomotives too. Can Amtrak #42, the locomotive saluting Veterans be far behind?
