The SD70ACe & SD70M-2 locomotives were introduced by Electro-Motive Diesel in 2004 & 2005 to both compete with GE and meet the Environmental Protection Agency's Tier-2 emissions requirements that took effect on January 1, 2005. Both locomotives are updated and improved versions of earlier SD70 series locomotives.

Each locomotive features a third generation EMD 710 diesel prime mover, rated at 4300 horsepower. EMD had to make relatively few modifications to meet the new emission standards. As such, the motor enjoys the same reputation for durability as the thousands of other 710's in use around the world.

While the SD70ACe and SD70M-2 look similar to previous models, they both feature many improvements. They take full advantage of the latest in computer control and ergonomics for improved crew comfort and better performance. Since their introduction, further advancements have been made and the new SD70ACe's and SD70M-2's being produced now have several notable differences both inside and out.
