The EMD SD40-2 is one of the most successful six axle locomotives in history. It was built from 1972 to 1989, with nearly a total production of nearly 4000 units. These locomotives have served with every virtually every Class I in operation since their introduction.Today, many examples of this locomotive remain in service both with Class I's and short lines across North America. With a reputation for rugged dependability and a ready supply of parts, the EMD SD40-2 is sure to continue in revenue service for decades to come.

Already designed from the start to be DCC and Sound friendly, the HO SD40-2 Mid Production with Loksound Select DCC takes it one step further, providing such features as smooth motor function control, multiple available horn and prime mover sounds, and loud and clear audio quality through a custom fitted speaker installed by a Kato technician.
