The GE Dash 9-44CW is a 4,400 hp (3,273 kW) diesel locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania. Keeping in tradition with GE's locomotive series nicknames beginning with the "Dash 7" of the 1970s, the C44-9W was dubbed the Dash 9 upon its debut in 1993. The design has since proven popular with North American railroads. Because of more stringent emissions requirements that came into effect in the United States on January 1, 2005, the Dash 9-44CW has been replaced in production by the GE ES44DC.
Many North American railroads have ordered the C44-9W. They were originally ordered by Chicago & North Western Railway, Santa Fe, BNSF, CSX, Southern Pacific, Canadian National Railway, BC Rail, and Union Pacific Railroad. Norfolk Southern purchased the very similar Dash 9-40CWs.
The GE Dash C44-9W is designated as C44MEi by the Brazilian roads.
The GE Dash 9-40CW is a 4,000 horsepower (3,000 kW) diesel locomotive that was built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania between January 1996 and September 2004. All 1,090 units were built for Norfolk Southern, as road numbers 8889 to 9978. Part of the "Dash 9" locomotive series, these units are usually rated at 4,000 hp (3,000 kW) instead of the usual 4,400 hp (3,300 kW) offered by the standard C44-9W. These units were basically an extension of the previous order for the standard cab GE Dash 9-40C. They were built under the same premise that a lower power rating would prolong the life of the engine, and use less fuel. There is, however, a manual override switch that allows the engineer to run the engine with all 4,400 hp (3,300 kW) if necessary. The C40-9W was replaced in the 2005 locomotive catalog with the Evolution Series model, the ES40DC.
The GE Dash 9-40C is a 4,000 hp (2,980 kW) diesel locomotive that was built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania between January 1995 and March 1995. The C40-9 was built with a lower horsepower rating than standard, 4,000 hp instead of the then GE standard 4,400 hp. These were the only conventional cab Dash-9s built. All units have rooftop mounted air conditioner units. This gives the units their distinct look. - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
