The Norfolk Southern system’s lines extend over 14400 miles in 20 states and the province of Ontario. They ship bituminous coal primarily from Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia mainly to electric generating utilities in the U.S. and Canada. CSX loads its coal mainly from the Midwest and Southeast. Much of it is transported in unit trains to utilities and also to Baltimore MD, Newport News VA and Mobile Alabama for export.
