The Environmental Protection & Improvement Company (EPIC) is based in Newark, NJ—the same city where Atlas was founded more than 100 years ago. Atlas continues to operate in New Jersey today, just a few miles away from Newark in Hillside, NJ.
EPIC has more than 35 years of experience transporting waste materials by rail and is one of the largest operators of articulated bulk waste carrier cars in the United States. Beginning in the 1990s, EPIC expanded its fleet of articulated bulk carriers and sealed 20-foot containers as rail became an increasingly important method of transporting waste following the closure of New York City landfills.
EPIC’s distinctive articulated bulk carriers are a familiar sight throughout the Northeast, hauling refuse from the New York City area to destinations across the country. Rail transportation provides a safe, efficient and cost-effective alternative to trucking while reducing highway traffic, fuel consumption and environmental impact.
Today, EPIC and its parent company, Synagro Technologies, Inc., provide nationwide transportation solutions for a wide range of materials, including biosolids, municipal solid waste, contaminated soils, industrial wastes, construction debris and other commodities. With more than 900,000 tons transported annually and over 11 million tons safely moved by rail, EPIC continues to play an important role in America’s waste transportation network.

Prototype Info
The Articulated Bulk Carrier car was designed to navigate tight curves and small, narrow industries where a flat car may have overhang clearance issues on curves, or length issues. Essentially, the Articulated Bulk Carrier is a long, traditional flat car with a pivot point in the center, along with a truck underneath the pivot point to provide additional weight distribution to allow for more containers to be loaded. This car was introduced in the late 20th century when many landfills around NYC closed, and refuse had to be moved elsewhere.
