We’ve now received the first factory samples of the new National Steel Car 4275 / 4300 cu. ft. 3-Bay Potash Hoppers from our factory in China.
These cars represent a very important part of modern Canadian railroading. Built by National Steel Car, they are widely used in potash and fertilizer service across North America, moving product from the mines in Saskatchewan to domestic agricultural markets and export terminals.
The focus of this release is the large number of privately owned and leased fleets, which form the backbone of this traffic. Companies like Canpotex originally coordinated potash exports overseas, with their cars often seen moving product to port terminals for shipment abroad. Many of these cars are leased from major US-based banks and finance companies, and after long service cycles- (typically around 18 years) they are cycled out of lease and sold on to other operators.
Agrium, Potash Corporation, and Mosaic were the original shareholders of Canpotex, and their fleets continue to be central in moving potash from Saskatchewan mines to North American agricultural regions where it is used in fertilizer production.
The different paint schemes in this release reflect that evolution:
Over time, NSC production changes have also created subtle structural variations between batches, resulting in multiple prototype versions in real service.
We’ve also had strong demand to revisit the K+S paint scheme, which is why additional runs are included in this release.
All of this comes together in a highly prototypical modern potash train- mixed ownership, mixed paint, and evolving fleets working side by side across the system.
We are also introducing the Canpotex leased cars with TCMX reporting marks. These represent the latest generation of Canpotex equipment, and are dedicated exclusively to white potash service, reflecting their specialized production and routing.
We have now received pre-production samples directly from our factory in China. These give us the first physical look at the production models. Please note: these are pre-production samples and may still be revised before final production.
Pre-orders are still open as we made a few extra cars more then pre ordered. reserve yours today
