Mike Confalone’s proto-freelanced Allagash Railway and shortline Oxford County look, feel and operate like real railroads. Set in the early spring of 1982 in rugged central and western Maine, the Allagash and Oxford County are popular with railfans who flock by the dozens to see First Generation Alco and EMD power hauling heavy tonnage over mountain grades and across scenic, rural vistas.

Serving Maine’s paper industry, the AGR and OCTY work several large on- line mills hauling finished paper products and receiving inbound raw materials. They also receive shipments of bulk grain products for on-line mills and local feed dealers. The Allagash and Oxford County interchange with prototype regional carriers, making them an important link in the national rail network. The Allagash and Oxford County freight car roster reflects both railroads’ dedication to reliably servicing the needs of their customers. From shortline per diem box cars, to rebuilt and modernized 40’ and 50’ box cars for paper and pulp service, to more modern covered hoppers for grain service, the AGR and OCTY have an impressive fleet.
