It’s “Day One” on May 1st, 1971...
...And the National Railroad Passenger Corporation known as Amtrak is about to take over commercial rail travel in the United States. Having a fleet comprised entirely of inherited locomotives and rolling stock, Amtrak had former Pennsylvania/Penn Central EMD E8A #4316 painted into a special livery to commemorate their first day of operations. Once more uniform branding was developed, this locomotive was renumbered to 322 and continued to serve Amtrak until it’s retirement in 1981.
Amtrak’s EMD E8s:
The EMD E8A was already a venerable locomotive at the time of Amtrak’s inception, being renowned for their smooth ride, great speed, and reliability among 1st generation diesels. Around the time of the bankruptcy of the Penn Central railroad, Amtrak inherited many of its locomotives, including the ex-Pennsylvania Railroad passenger E8’s that would have pulled the Broadway Limited in days past. It was these E8s that comprised much of Amtrak’s locomotive fleet in the non-electrified track of the northeast, and until new power could be developed, it was these 1950s locos that continued to serve the railroad until the early 1980s.
Prototype Information:
The E8 and E9 diesel locomotives share the similar “bulldog nose” carbody style as the shorter, more popular F7 and were powered by two separate 12-cylinder prime movers (i.e., diesel engines) capable of producing 2250/2400 hp. E8 and E9 locomotives also rode on A-1-A trucks (powered axle-idler axle-powered axle), resulting in an exceptionally smooth ride favored by crews. The E8 and E9 were produced in both A-units and cabless B-units; the A-units were usually built to railroad specification of either single or dual headlight and freight or passenger pilot. Like the F3 and F7 of the same time period, the E8 and E9 were utilized in both passenger and freight service.
Model Information:
The Kato EMD E8 and E9 locomotive both come in A and B (cabless) variations, similar to that of their smaller F unit sister locomotives.
