The reporting marks found on the cars, LK213 and 214, reference the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 2, verses 13 and 14.
The 40 foot plug door box car is a cross of a standard box car and a refrigerator car. The plug door ensures a tight seal for the contents while the cars often feature some layer of insulation in the walls. This combination provides a level of moisture and temperature control not available in standard box cars. Many of these cars were produced after the end of World War II as the railroads upgraded equipment. These types of cars were used to carry a variety of temperature and moisture sensitive goods, such as produce and paper goods. They were in service for decades until they were gradually replaced by newer 50 foot versions.
