By the 2000’s, the five SOO SD60M’s slowly started to receive full CP repaints. They retained their rear number boards, but also gained rear ditch lights. Being a rarity, they have become a CP railfan favorite to catch and photograph.

After the 1995 BNSF merger, many units were patched to the initials of their new corporate owner. One unique unit, #9235 received a large BNSF font on the sides of the cab. Reportedly used from stencils for covered hoppers, it seems that it was the easiest thing to do to get the unit back on the road in a timely manner!

To make room for the onslaught of arriving new motive power, UP renumbered (and in some cases repainted) their aging fleet of SD60M’s. Retaining the red stripe sill, these units operated in the mid-2000’s before the full adaptation of adding the yellow stripes. Some fully repainted UP units were updated with UP’s “Lightning Stripe” scheme with wings on the nose. We are offering four different paint variations including a faded Prime for Grime version to add some variety to your fleet!

CSX
Included in an EMD advert promoting their then-new SD60M, EMD showed off an artist rendition CSX scheme applied. This was most likely done to help generate sales as CSX ordered 10 SD60’s in 1989. We bring this “what if” idea to life as our Legendary Liveries series! In an alternate timeline, CSX ordered 10 SD60M’s (8710-8719) for testing and crew comfort. They were delivered in CSX’s “Stealth” scheme, and operated with other highhorsepower locomotives in service.

Built for pulling heavy coal trains in the Midwest, these BN units eventually saw service all over the system. By the mid-1990’s, BN started to adapt to standard front ditch lights for better visibility.

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:
In 1984, EMD unveiled the first four SD60 demonstrator locomotives. The SD60 was equipped with a 3,800 horsepower, 16 cylinder, turbocharged 710G3A prime mover. Five years later, EMD began offering the SD60 with the wide nose “safety” cab with the infamous “Tri-Clops” 3-piece windshield, thus creating the SD60M. The term “Tri-clops” is a popular railfan nickname that refers to the original 3-window cab design.
Union Pacific was the first road to order these new SD60M locomotives followed by Burlington Northern and SOO Line. BN’s SD60M locomotives went on to the merged BNSF while the SOO Line units went to Canadian Pacific. Some of the BNSF units found more mileage with Norfolk Southern and in lease service for CEFX.
