Baldwin built the DS-4-4-1000 1,000 horsepower 4 axle switcher locomotives from 1946 to 1951. Even though all of these locomotives were called DS-4-4-1000, there were actually two versions that differed in the prime mover used. The early models had a non-turbo charged 1000 horsepower 8 cylinder prime mover. Sales were lackluster with only 56 locomotives built between 1946 and 1948. In 1948, the prime mover was replaced with a 6 cylinder turbocharged unit rated at 1000 horsepower that offered better performance. The improvement resulted in a large uptick in sales with this version accounting for almost 90% of all DS-4-4-1000 locomotives built with 446 produced between the introduction of the new prime mover in 1948 and the replacement of the model with the Baldwin S-12 in 1951.
