CP gondola proto

These gondolas are the workhorse of the industry. In US railroad terminology, a gondola is an open-topped rail vehicle used for transporting loose bulk materials. Because of their low side walls gondolas are also suitable for the carriage of such high-density cargos as steel plates or coils, or of bulky items such as prefabricated sections of rail track or scrap metals.

cp_1949-19591  Canadian Pacific (CP) 50’ gondola with fishbelly sides and drop ends is painted black with white lettering and word mark, and weathered to simulate a real world appearance. They were built by Eastern Car Company as part of the CP 340500-340999 series BLT 6-8/53; and CP 341700-341899 series BLT 10/56. They were in service until 2002.

The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) is a historic Canadian Class I railroad incorporated in 1881. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, it owns approximately 20,000 kilometres (12,500 mi) of track all across Canada and into the United States, stretching from Montreal to Vancouver, and as far north as Edmonton. Its rail network also serves Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee, Detroit, Chicago, and New York City in the United States.

The railway was originally built between Eastern Canada and British Columbia between 1881 and 1885 (connecting with Ottawa Valley and Georgian Bay area lines built earlier), fulfilling a promise extended to British Columbia when it entered Confederation in 1871. It was Canada's first transcontinental railway, but no longer reaches the Atlantic coast. Primarily a freight railway, the CPR was for decades the only practical means of long-distance passenger transport in most regions of Canada, and was instrumental in the settlement and development of Western Canada. The CPR became one of the largest and most powerful companies in Canada, a position it held as late as 1975.
