Since coal is no longer a major necessity in the United States, many coalporters have been left to rust with no particular use to railroads. These 50’ gondolas could hold over 44,000 pounds of  coal, a means which was very useful during an era of coal. The need of recycling these train cars had to be found!

Used alcohol grain for animal feed is popular for farmers in the western part of the United States, and the unused Coal Gondola cars proved up for the challenge and were converted for use as Protein Gondolas. These covered gondolas are used in freight trains in the western and southern parts of the states in long, endless fleets, primarily on the BNSF. Since the load of feed is biodegradable and needs to be delivered as quickly as possible, trains carrying these long loads are placed on top priority on the rails.
