Sixty-three GP60M locomotives were built by EMD for Santa Fe in 1990. The model is a GP60 with “North American” or “Safety” cab. In 1991, Santa Fe acquired 23 cabless GP60Bs to go with the GP60Ms. Both locomotives were assigned to Santa Fe’s hottest intermodal trains in groups of three and four units.
They also were regularly mixed with Santa Fe road power on all types of trains. The BNSF merger in 1996 greatly increased the variety of assignments and motive power combinations. Today, the GP60Ms and GP60Bs are primarily assigned road switcher service on the former Santa Fe Coast Division lines west of Belen, New Mexico.
