Introduced by Gunderson in 1985, these 40 ft well cars were among the first "twin stack" well cars allowing the stacking of two 40 ft containers, or a combination of 20 ft & 40 ft containers. This allowed trains of roughly the same length to carry twice the cargo. These cars are distinctive in that they have bulkheads at each end to brace the upper container, as there was some question as to the stability of stacked containers traveling by rail. Further experience and research demonstrated that the bulkheads were not needed and they have not been used on subsequent well car designs.

While domestic containers have grown to 53 feet, many international containers are still 20 & 40 feet, so these cars are still in use today. Many have been acquired by new operators, sometimes more than once, so they can be seen in a variety of paint schemes.
