Since the introduction of over the road trucks, there has been a continue drive for larger capacity trailers. Drop frame trailers are one way to achieve this. Generally, the frame of the trailer is higher over the fifth wheel where the king pin is located. From there back, the trailer will either have a lower deck height the entire way, or a lower deck with a higher deck over the wheels. This allows for taller and more cargo in the same length trailer. These 40 ft versions were introduced in the 1970's and saw extensive TOFC service.
