70 ton 2 bay hoppers were common in the 1940's to 1960's. They generally replaced earlier 50 and 55 ton cars and were eventually replaced with newer 90 and 100 three bay hoppers in many cases. There were a variety of designs of this type of car. Some were open hoppers, while others were closed depending on their intended use. Open cars could be used for coal, rock and other commodities that were not particularly susceptible to wind or wet conditions. Covered versions could be used for products that were more susceptible to adverse weather, such as cement.
