Have a look at the differences of the floor on the ends of the different versions of the Canpotex cars. See the cut outs for possible later use of 38 inch wheels. Later versions of the car left this cut out off the car as Canpotex decided to not switch wheel sizes. So NSC decised not to cut out holes that were never going to be needed.

See the different versions of the roof detail. Notice different hatches (flat vs raised), elongated cross walk, and diamond vs round holes pattern on the walkways. 11 roof supports vs 12 roof supports.
