The Canadian Pacific GMD SD40-2F "Red Barn"

PRODUCTION UPDATE: Bowser has been hard at work getting the shells for the SD40-2F tooled. They have posted some pictures of early test samples which are shown below. While it is important to note that these early test samples are not production quality, or perfect in every detail, they do show just how nice this model will be when finished. Reservations for these models are being accepted until June 9, 2016. And as with the Bowser GMD SD40-2’s, these will likely be in short supply when released. The GMD SD40-2F is a unique locomotive, only 25 were ever built. All were built for Canadian Pacific, who received them units in 1988 & 1989 after GMD SD40-2 production had ended. They were numbered 9000 to 9024.

These 25 locomotives are unique for a number of reasons beyond their limited numbers. They were the only cowl units ever purchased by Canadian Pacific, and were also the only new motive power to be delivered in the CP "Action Red" paint scheme.

Canadian Pacific had wanted to order additional SD40-2's, but EMD had already ended their production. As a result, Canadian Pacific and GMD developed this locomotive. Unfortunately, being a relatively small production run and after the SD40-2's had ended production, EMD had to rely on outside sources for some of the parts. This resulted in many early problems with these locomotives, particular with the EMD 645 prime movers.

Eventually these issues were addressed and the SD40-2F's became reliable locomotives. Though from a number of reports, they were never popular with crews. They were however, popular with CP fans, as they were so unique.

They were initially used in British Columbia to haul coal unit trains to the Robert’s Bank coal port. They were replaced in this by newer GE units in 1995 and then were used interchangeably with SD40-2s across the Canadian Pacific network. CP 9000 & CP 9022 were repainted in the CP "Dual Flags" scheme during the CP Rail System era. Most of the other units have had only minor paint work or body modifications.

In 2012, Canadian Pacific removed a number of these locomotives from service for conversion as part of the larger SD40-2 to SD30C-ECO rebuild program. As of 2015, none remain in active service with Canadian Pacific, though several are stored in operating condition.

This locomotive has never been offered in a plastic ready to run version. Previously, they have been offered as a resin kit body or in brass, both beyond the means or abilities of many modelers. Bowser is changing all that by offering these locomotives on their new GMD SD40-2 platform. This means that all that really has to be done is to complete the shell tooling, which Bowser is already working on. This is a locomotive that many modelers have wanted, but seemed unlikely to be mass produced with so few of the prototype made. Bowser will be offering an accurate, ready to run model with road number specific details and in the four different schemes these units wore. Available in both DCC Ready & DCC w/Sound versions, the first release is projected to be in late 2016.
